Ronald McDonald House uplifts families during the hardest times

ronald mcdonald house milwaukee

It's finally paying tribute to its third and most recent expansion. The generosity of our community partners helps us keep families together.

Where you can stay

Please make plans for the care of your other children before coming to the hospital. One adult may stay overnight with their child in the hospital. A single sleeper couch is in most patient rooms for one parent or grandparent to stay. You will need to bring your own personal care items and sleepwear.

Hospital visits for staying at least one night

The Family Room provides family members and other caregivers, including those currently staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Milwaukee, a place to rest and recharge on Rogers’ campus while their loved one is in treatment. These families come from all 50 states and many countries around the world whose children are receiving medical care at Children’s Wisconsin or other area hospitals. We offer a place to call home at little or no cost, so families can stay together. Many families try to contribute what they can—even if it’s the suggested $20 a night donation. At Ronald McDonald House Charities Eastern Wisconsin, we provide strength and support to children and their families by keeping them together when they need it most.

We’re caring for families around the world through our 3 core programs

We know you and your family may be traveling hundreds of miles to receive care. Making the decision to receive mental health treatment isn’t easy, especially when you’re across the country from those you care about most. To help you during this transition, we’ve compiled a list of lodging, dining and entertainment options close to each of our locations. Three stories of this 25-thousand square foot site and the outside will be decked out for the holidays. Organizers say it's a fantastic way to take in the sights and sounds of the season all while helping sick children and their families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Wauwatosa.

RMHC serves millions of children and their families each year, but more need our help. Yet, simply because we don’t have enough sleeping rooms around the world, 138,000+ families are turned away each year. Your donation can help us to expand to fulfill the needs of more sick children and their families. And how exciting that in the same month we celebrate the completion of this bridge, we also celebrate the completion of our expansion.

House Story

All the proceeds will go toward the Ronald McDonald House Charities Eastern Wisconsin. The house welcomed a few select supporters inside and our own Steph Brown was there for the celebration. For nearly 40 years the Ronald McDonald House has been a place of comfort and support to families. To make an appointment, call our Central Scheduling team or request an appointment online. The Family Room is operated by Ronald McDonald House Charities® Eastern Wisconsin staff and volunteers. Kids adore the "Magic Room." The Warrens took Lydia and Bennett to the special room.

Vetscher explains, "When you're volunteering at the house to see just the gratitude of the people who are coming through the line to get dinner. It really touches you." MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Oliver Vetscher looks like any other happy active and playful five-year-old boy, but Oliver had a tenuous start in life, diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. Our House through the eyes of guest families, volunteers and staff. “Our entire committee is proud of our work and know we have the momentum to raise the final funds to open the house to the public,” Lippe added.

"I really think they are that safety net that people don't realize they need until it's actually there," said Vetscher. Vetscher recalls, "His birth was a surprise. His placement into our family was a surprise, and then his very serious medical condition on top of everything was very much a surprise. In a sudden event like that your family, your friends, like they just can't ramp up that quickly." MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Ronald McDonald House Charities Eastern Wisconsin has a big reason to celebrate.

Many area hotels offer discounts to parents or family of our patients. Now we can offer a solution to our families for a safe and efficient way to cross Watertown Plank Road to and from Children’s Wisconsin. The bridge also represents the great relationship that unites our Ronald McDonald House with Children’s Wisconsin.

We have a general list of items you or your loved one will need during the treatment stay. It brings a huge amount of relief knowing that families do not have to wait for our scheduled volunteer van service to get a ride to or from the hospital, or even worse, have to cross Watertown Plank Road in front of our building — many times in the dark with significant traffic. As we celebrate our 30th year of Ronald McDonald House serving families with critically ill or injured children, the completion of the pedestrian sky bridge over Watertown Plank Road signifies a great achievement. In order to make your stay at Children's Wisconsin as easy as possible, we created a list of hotels, motels, and other options to help out-of-town families plan where to stay in Milwaukee.

Vetscher shares, "They're really a Godsend. I mean, my family knows that firsthand. We were able to experience what that house provides, a family in need. You know, personally, it will always have a place in my heart." As a thank-you for the care Oliver received, Vetscher recently enlisted TMJ4 for a team to make and serve a home-cooked meal for families at the Milwaukee area Ronald McDonald House. The mission of the Ronald McDonald House is to keep families together and promote the health and wellbeing of children. Those with the non-profit say all the upgrades are a win for everyone. “There is nothing more cherished than the ability to be able to focus on the care of your child without having to worry about daily life logistics,” Gomes added.

Many of our supporters choose to support our future through planned gifts. Unlike cash donations, planned gifts are typically made from assets in your estate rather than from disposable income, and may come to fruition after your lifetime. Even people of modest means can make a difference in the lives of children by planning a gift. Most children spend very little time interacting with doctors, nurses, or other health care professionals. To make a significant impact on children's overall health, we reach out to families beyond our hospital and clinic walls. Brothers, sisters and other children are not allowed to stay overnight.

The last stage is taxiing in, which is from when the flight touches down to the flight arriving at it's gate. Flying private is roughly 5.7x faster, and saves you about 4.5 hours in your total travel time. I've never seen the airport as bad in regards to security lines and wait. The plane wasn't there yet so we had to wait for it to arrive, then deplane everyone and then wait again for the plane to be cleaned. After 45 minuites we were allowed on the plane. The 2nd plane must have had bathroom issues because we did not have any food service whatsoever. That made for a long time not to have anything considering that we had just made it to the original gate and we had no time to stop to get food or a drink. Then we didn't want to leave the gate to get food because we wouldn't know how much longer the delay would be.

What airlines fly from Chicago to Charlotte?

It was delayed several times and at one point it was supposed to depart at 3.40am! At which point we ended up staying overnight and booked long a separate United flight for early morning departure. The pilot claimed an internal issue then an external equipment issue that needed to be adddressed. I would fly again the whole experience was great. The only feed back I can give that they don't do that American Airlines does is the crew there is more humorous with boarding and thank their passengers.

I was told we'd have a hot breakfast option in first class, so I chose not get a hot breakfast. It was a very strange meal, but the fresh fruit was very good quality. No service from MBS to ORD, not even water.

Had we been told that the total time would have been aprox 45 min later we would have left to get food and a beverage. We had to wait again for the okay to the pilot to take off so we were on the runway for another 20 min. Overall, we were delayed over 2 hours which felt like 4 hours. Flight cancelled and was told by a rude gate agent that they don’t accommodate on other airlines. Had to wait 5 hours for a connecting flight that had a 7 hour layover.

Further investigation revealed that the majority of the historic interior had been brought down to the 100-year-old studs, causing an irreparable loss of historic fabric, a monument plundered. This gallery has images of our NYE menu items, as well as specials and cocktails from the end of the year. As a reminder, all rooms are located on the second story, meaning all guests must be able to walk up a full flight of steps.

Inn: Open 24/7

They opened the inn first while the restaurant staff was hired and the menu established. The grand opening was in May of 1988, on the 100th anniversary of the home being built in 1888. We’ve updated each room to have modern amenities, all while maintaining the home’s Victorian character.

Another twist in the story is that the new owner of the property is the 19-year-old K-pop singer Samuel Arrendondo, aka Punch of the hip hop duo 1Punch and now known simply as Samuel. Apparently, Mr. Arrendondo wanted the cachet of living in an historic house in an historic district, but not the atmosphere of a historic interior. He and his mother Ms. Kyung Ju Kim, as well as a Mr. Roy Yun, are the addressees of a letter sent by the City of Los Angeles Office of Historic Resources giving 30 days notice to correct the violations and the unauthorized demolitions or face the cancellation of the Mills Act contract. Anne Marie, Mark, and Sean parted ways after a decade in business together (opening and managing other restaurants in TX and SC). The Wilton was then purchased by Jeff Hill, Joe Irvin, and Rodney Eagle in 2015, when it experienced a bit of a renaissance. The new owners had decades of experience in hospitality, and had a wonderful vision for the Wilton.

We purposefully designed the rooms so that the TVs are not the main focal point, but are still comfortable to view while relaxing in bed. All rooms were completed with desks as well, which gives each room a designated workspace if need be. After the TKE fraternity moved to another building closer to campus, the home spent roughly two years undergoing heavy renovations. The commercial kitchen was added to the back of the home, and the second story was renovated so that each of the five bedrooms could have their own private bathrooms (thus, making it an inn-space).

Los Angeles Christian Health Centers (LACHC) was founded in 1995 to expand and provide equitable access to low-cost and no-cost, quality, comprehensive healthcare services. The Wilton House has everything you need to celebrate your anniversary in luxury. Enjoy a bottle of sparkling wine with a cheese platter either in the lounge, sun-room, outside on our garden patio, or on our front porch with a view of Main Street.

It is also a rare example of a Queen Anne Victorian home in the south (Wilton fell in love with the style while living in New York). After Wilton’s passing, the Shenk family owned the home for years, it became a boarding house, then apartments, then played host to the TKE Fraternity for just over a decade. This historic bedroom is bathed in warm evening light, overlooking sunsets from the front yard. The Tea room is painted in faded pink and dark brown earth tones (Irish Tea and Turkish Coffee) which add to the coziness of this room. An antique tea cart and vintage books adorn the room, alongside local artwork, a smart TV, and writing desk.

Lawn parties, bonfires, couches on the roof, and of course the occasional studying. We’ve hosted many of these guests 30+ years later, and they are thankful that she’s been restored to her former glory. We love to hear tales from the days of TKE, so it is always a treat to host fraternity members! We’ve found physiology notes stuffed away in the attic, along with books that were never returned, and some wedding announements from 1977. Decorated in slate-blue to honor the Blue Stone used to build Wilton’s foundation, this room has become very popular. Furnished with a tall king sized bed, armoire, massive mahogany desk, and two comfortable chairs set in our turret, overlooking Main Street.

The walls are adorned with gold accents, including framed blueprints and local artwork. Sit back and relax in two comfortably chairs, sip some wine, and bask in the history around you. The closet, painted midnight orchid, offers additional storage with gold accent hooks. It replaces LACHC’s original location of 20 years on Winston Street behind the LA Mission. Instead of five queen beds in the home, the three largest rooms each received a king size bed and updated decor. In addition, all five rooms were updated to have smart tv’s in them, which allows guests to access Hulu, Netflix, Spotify, and much more during their stay.

Adding color to the home gave each room a different atmosphere and draws the attention of guests, especially compared to the “decade of beige” that came before. After mastering business in an expanding town, Wilton had his home built beginning in 1880, with construction completed in 1888. It was one of the first homes wired for electricity, which over time, has given Wilton credit for “bringing electricity” to the valley.

As a preservationist, I am always filled with a little bit of dread when I drive through our neighborhoods and see construction dumpsters, porta-potties, or fencing around a newly purchased historic home. While I know that change is always part of the life of any house, especially old ones, and new owners will make their mark, you never know quite what you are going to get. Most work involves kitchens and bathrooms that need updating, rooms that require alteration, and in some cases, additions constructed for the needs of modern living. Purchasers of historic homes, however, tend to buy them for their traditional or unique design, solid construction and fine details.

There is even an original piece of Blue Stone carved in 1880 to form the foundation of the home. It was removed during renovations in 1986, so we placed it in this room for guests to enjoy! Formerly known as “The Rose Room”, The Stone Room was renovated in 2023, but we wanted to save a section of wallpaper to remember its 35 year history as The Rose Room. The Joshua Wilton House can be divided into two separate gallery spaces, allowing us to feature two artists at once. One artist can also occupy the entire gallery should they have enough work to fill the space.

They brought in a diverse team of chefs, began serving Brunch and Afternoon Tea, and once again updated the menu and service style to better reflect Harrisonburg’s needs. Jeff, Joe, and Rodney also owned and operated the Local Chop and Grill House since 2009; which gave the Wilton a “sister-restaurant” to exchange ideas with, share staff, and coordinate large events. Instead of the busy, purple zebra carpet, the owners selected a beautiful deep red carpet for the home.

Joshua House will have its virtual Grand Opening called “A Promise Kept” on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at 6pm PST on Zoom. Mills Act contracts significantly reduce the property tax burden on owners of designated properties — to incentivize and underwrite preservation. Breaking the contract through unapproved alterations can lead to the loss of the tax benefit and a 12.5 percent penalty fee on the fair market value of the property, in this case a penalty of nearly $250,000! Well, the reality turned out to be something different, as concerned neighbors in early April began to see demolition activity removing hardwood floors, mahogany details etc.

Actually, this same deep red was used in the 1960’s when the home was a private residence. The walls were beige and a tad boring in the 2000’s, so the new owners selected a slate-green tone for the dining rooms, dark green for the bar, dark red in two dining rooms, and installed hardwood floors in the sunrooms. All five of our inn rooms also received new wood floors, which replaced the beige carpets.

We also work with fantastic local florists, photographers, and videographers to ensure that your day is perfect! Anyone who has been married at Wilton is always welcome back; we love to hear stories about their special day and remenisce with them. Described as the “real Animal House”, the TKE fraternity spent over a decade living it up in what is now the Wilton House.

But it takes a special kind of philistine to purchase a designated property in an historic district and then proceed to wreck it so that it cancels the Mills Act contract on the house that has been in place since 1998. In roughly 1986, the home was purchased by Craig & Burt Moore, who spent two years renovating the home into what is now known as The Joshua Wilton House. The inn on the second story opened first, then the restaurant shortly after. Despite changing ownerships over the decades, the Wilton House has remained a staple for quality food, creative cocktails, and cherished history. Additional funding was provided by The Ahmanson Foundation, Health Net, Kaiser Permanente, W.M. Keck Foundation, Lawrence Ng Family Foundation, The Ralph M. In 2020 LACHC’s staff of 170 cared for more than 11,000 patients who received nearly 36,000 medical examinations, over 5,000 dental visits, and over 12,000 mental health sessions. The Wilton came under new ownership in the 2000’s by Anne Marie, Mark, and Sean; three JMU graduates and fans of the Wilton. They successfully brought the Wilton out of its 80’s/90’s phase by diversifying our menu, style of service, and redecorating. Instead of pink or dark purple carpeting from the 80’s, the new owners put in a simple beige carpet, updated the artwork for a more modern feel, and brought in “new” antiques to the home. In this time, our staff has grown and changed with us, bringing with them decades of experience and personal flare, culminating in exquisite cocktails and cuisine. “Yesterday, four brave law enforcement officers — including a Deputy U.S. Marshal — were killed in Charlotte, North Carolina in the line of duty. The trend is helping accelerate the growth in home sale prices among the most high-end homes at a faster clip than less expensive properties. After Sims had used the restroom and dried off, he bumped into the brothers and their father near the elevators. #cameronrobbins #fyp I know they were drunk and probably didnt grasp the severity of the situation but to just record and say bye bye knowing he waw struggling breaks my heart. Idiling in the onyx waters as your only source of light drifts away slowly, with possibly dozens of sharks directly underneath you, is no way to go. As one Twitter commenter pointed out, the absolute terror of being Robbins at that moment is nightmare fuel. Better to accept hypothermia as your fate over being a midnight meal for sharks. Robbins disappeared three days after his graduation from University Laboratory School.

In a statement, Royal Caribbean said it immediately halted the ship and dispatched boats to search for Parker, but had no luck. Bryan Sims, a passenger who claimed he saw the incident unfold, told the paper he’d been hanging out with Parker and his brother in the hot tub.

Royal Caribbean confirmed that a passenger, whose identity has not been revealed, went overboard near The Bahamas at about 4 a.m. He had been drinking and had just gotten into an argument with his father, witnesses said. The video shows the teen heading toward the floatation device until he seemingly notices a sliver of shark appearing in the water, prompting him to swim in the opposite direction of the buoy. As passengers looked at Robbins in disbelief and panic, they threw him a buoy to help him stay afloat. The party ship remained in the area for several hours while the crew looked for Robbins.

Bryan Sims told The Post that he was hanging out with Levion and his 18-year-old brother, Seth, in the hotel tub of the ship in the early hours of April 4 before they went their separate ways. The US Coast Guard called off its search for the North Port man a day earlier. The Liberty of the Seas departed from South Florida and was 57 miles from Great Inagua in The Bahamas when the passenger went overboard.

The fact that they’re blurry, and do not definitively show even the outline of a shark, hasn’t kept the videos from going viral. Several accounts have also claimed to use audio isolation to prove an unintelligible shout in the video is warning the teen about a fin in the water. Robbins is featured on crime accounts and news TikToks, and there’s even a growing trend that puts sad songs behind videos imagining Robbins’ last moments.

In in its lone statement on the incident, Royal Caribbean said last week it was “providing support and assistance” to Levion’s family. But Francel, who runs an AC business in Port Charlotte, told the local newspaper that he wasn’t arguing with Levion and that his son wasn’t trying to take his own life. I believe he is alive,” Francel Parker said to the local Florida paper Wednesday.

Siblings, 8 and 5, killed, 13 injured as suspected drunk driver plows through children's birthday

Heartbreaking video shows 20-year-old Levion Parker happily swimming in the ocean and fishing with his pals just a week before he drunkenly jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship and was never seen again. First, let's address the conditional statement that news of a death is always tragic. But damn, this video of a cruise ship losing a passenger in the middle of nowhere, dead of night, and in shark-infested waters is straight-up terrifying.

Robbins was last seen splashing in the dark, “shark-infested” waters a few feet from the boat, before vanishing from view. Cameron Robbins, 18, graduated from University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge in May and was on a trip to the Bahamas with students from several local high schools. The Blackbeard’s Revenge, which is designed to resemble a pirate ship, remained in the area for several hours while the crew attempted to look for Robbins. Witnesses said he appeared drunk and was fighting with his dad, according to reports.

Moments later, he said Parker leaped into the sea without a trace from an area that housed whirlpools and hot tubs. Loved ones reportedly witnessed Parker jump off the 11th deck of the Liberty of the Seas cruise liner in what appeared to be an “impulsive leap,” the Post reported last week, citing a witness. “There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately,” Deborah Morrison told The Post. He said Levion is a skilled diver who works on a commercial fishing boat, and he is demanding to know how his underage son was given alcohol on the four-day cruise to Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island. The younger Parker allegedly jumped off the 18-story Liberty of the Seas around 4 a.m.

And while Robbins is no longer here, he is survived by a grieving community — all of whom will have access to the things people are saying about their loved one. “He will be missed desperately by his family and friends,” his obituary read, “who will carry their cherished memories of him to eternity.” For Robbins’ sake, and the sake of his family, the internet should let him rest. A chaotic video taken moments after the jump also shows the recent graduate ignoring onlookers’ pleas to grab a buoy.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, Cameron Robbins, who had just graduated from University Laboratory School (U-High), jumped off the boat as a dare on May 24. A video obtained by DailyMail showed Robbins splashing in the water near the boat before he vanished. Social media posts showed Levion graduated from North Port High School, in southwest Florida between Sarasota and Fort Myers, in 2022.

Coast Guard -- but Robbins was never found, and the search has now been called off after several unsuccessful days of scouring the area for any sign of him. Sims added that the ship was moving “pretty fast” and that Francel screamed for staff to alert the captain, which brought the ship to a complete stop within 20 minutes. The vessel launched rescue boats, but to no avail—Levion was nowhere to be found. Instead, Francel told the paper his son’s spontaneous jump was done out of drunken ignorance—something he suggested should have been avoidable. In an interview with his hometown newspaper, The Daily Sun, Francel Parker insisted that his son wasn’t suicidal and that they weren’t arguing before his fatal plunge—a statement that contradicts what others onboard told the New York Post they witnessed.

Surge at Sea: Alarming Increase of Norovirus Outbreaks on Cruise Ships

VSP inspectors board ships and conduct thorough checks to ensure compliance, and the standards are high. You can find a list of the most recent inspection scores and lists of violations for each ship on the VSP website. Psychology Today, a Substack entitled "Minded by Science" and have written articles for The New York Times, Time, The Guardian, The HuffPost, STAT, the MIT Technology Review and others.

CDC cruise ship Norovirus reports

It operates hospital ships since 1978 and also has currently the world's largest hospital ship (excluding navy vessels) - MV Africa Mercy. Most hospital ships are navy vessels (operated by military forces) which are specifically built for use in war zones. Major (in some cases epidemic) illness outbreaks are among the "biggies" that can bring down the brand's reputation on the market. Cruise illness issues often result in lower booking rates and cheaper prices - which is bad for the business. During the onboard illness outbreak, VSP requires the cruise company to activate the "Outbreak Prevention and Response Plan" (vessel's response to illness cases).

How does norovirus spread on cruise ships?

For example, 100 cases on a single ship might seem like a lot, but on a vessel like Oasis of the Seas, which carries more than 5,400 passengers, 100 cases are only about 2% of the onboard population. The “vomiting” should be a tip off as to what may happen when you get infected with norovirus. The most common symptoms of a norovirus infection are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramping. You can also get a low-grade fever, chills, a headache, and muscle aches.

Norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships surge to decade-high levels: How to avoid the stomach bug

That changed on Sept. 18, 2019, when the CDC was informed that one of the cruise ships was sailing into U.S. jurisdiction. The agency’s Vessel Sanitation Program was informed of an outbreak that had sickened 117 passengers and eight crew members on a ship sailing from Germany to New York City. Stool samples revealed that the passengers and crew members were sickened with norovirus, a common stomach virus. Norovirus spreads easily in close quarters, such as those found on cruise ships.

At least 28 of the Silver Nova ship’s 633 guests and one of its crew members reported feeling sick during their 16-day voyage from Peru, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday. The federal agency recommends that people avoid cruise travel if they are at increased risk of severe illness, regardless of vaccination status. A norovirus outbreak can cause significant disruption to the planned activities and itineraries of a cruise. Infected individuals must be isolated, common areas may need to be closed for cleaning, and in severe cases, the ship may even have to return to port. In serious cases where outbreaks cannot be contained, cruise lines might actually pull a ship out of service for a few days so it can undergo a more thorough sanitization.

Outbreaks 2013 reports

That’s how many people have been infected with the norovirus while aboard cruise ships this year, according to CDC data. The outbreaks happened on Celebrity Cruises, Viking Cruises, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and P&O Cruises. Hand hygiene is key to prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus — but the way you clean your hands matters, experts note. It has to be with soap and water, because alcohol-based hand sanitizers are not effective against norovirus. The number of outbreaks in the first six months of 2023 is higher than the yearly total during every year since 2012, when there were 16 outbreaks on cruise ships reported to the CDC.

It's a very common, highly contagious, ruthlessly efficient and uncomfortably bad virus affecting the stomach and large intestines. Often called "stomach flu" (the med term is "Gastroenteritis") the infection results in massive vomiting and diarrhea. Sickness outbreaks are considered as such if the percentage of infected people is over 3%. The virus is not seasonal and usually not serious (in medical terms).

Ferry's train deck was reconstructed and converted into a hospital. The ship project started in March 1999 with the vessel's acquisition through a donation from Balcraig Foundation (UK), which purchased the boat for US$6,5 million. Attacking a hospital ship is considered a war crime, but enemy forces have the right to board them for inspections. Search for medical assistance - consult the ship's physician if no actions provide relief. So keep your hands clean, keep your mind clear, always hope for the best.

What preventative measures should I take to avoid coming down with Norovirus?

The virus is commonly spread through direct contact with an infected person, consuming contaminated food or water, or touching surfaces or objects contaminated with the virus. One of the main challenges in containing norovirus is its ability to survive on various surfaces for a significant amount of time, making it easy to pick up unknowingly. The bug thrives in crowded conditions and is spread through food and by touching contaminated surfaces. The easiest way to avoid the ailment is to wash your hands with soap and water after using the bathroom, before eating and after touching surfaces touched by others.

For the most part, Norovirus outbreaks are the results of passengers setting sail sick ... Even though you may be tempted to conceal your illness, you would be doing a great disservice to the other passengers and the crew on the cruise by keeping it a secret. Typically, norovirus lasts for one to three days, though you can spread the illness for a few days after. While each virus has a different ability to transmit, norovirus is a highly transmissible infection. According to the CDC, each person who is infected with norovirus sheds billions of viral particles. Many of the symptoms last for just two or three days and while it may come on and leave quite quickly in comparison to other viruses, during the time the symptoms are present, it can be extremely uncomfortable.

In 2018, the number of reported illness outbreaks on cruise ships was 15. The total number of infected was 1177 (of those 1099 passengers and 78 crew). They must also submit reports if 2% or more of the passengers and crew become ill and the ship is scheduled to visit a U.S. port within 15 days. If the number hits 3% or more, cases must be reported to the CDC even if the ship is not scheduled to call on a U.S. port within the next 15 days.

Questions or messages regarding errors in formatting should be addressed to For extra peace of mind, you can also research your cruise line prior to booking. The United States is not alone in this increase in norovirus cases.

While this virus tends to be short-lived, treatment is based on symptomatic care. And recent data from the CDC has noted that over 15% of norovirus tests are coming back positive. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, cruise passenger volume is estimated to reach 106% of 2019 levels this year, with 31.5 million passengers expected to set sail. Surfaces or objects that are contaminated with norovirus can be cleaned with a high-level disinfectant like bleach, per Ostrosky.

Because of this, there were no norovirus outbreaks in 2020 and 2021. However, in March 2022 the agency dropped the health notice, though it strongly urged against cruising without a booster shot. Such viral/bacterial outbreak incidents affect the vacation experience of thousands of people, being packed up in a floating resort for many days on end. In confined spaces with frequent passenger turnover (like big capacity cruise ships), it is easy for diseases to spread - whether food- or air-borne, or otherwise. However, there's a tendency to cover up the severity of this issue. The following statistics show the number of cruise ship illness outbreaks in recent years.

Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal is calling for the CDC and cruise lines to again halt cruise travel, six months after the industry mounted its comeback. The CDC said 88 vessels are now either under investigation or observation, but it did not specify how many COVID-19 cases have been reported. Here's everything you need to know about Norovirus -- and how to avoid getting sick on your next cruise vacation. Norovirus cases have spiked across the United States this year, which some experts say is the result of ending COVID-19 restrictions.
